Moral Judgements on Birth Control Endangering Women's Lives.

This article poses an interesting question about the rise in Pharmacists that are denying women access to birth control because of moral objections. The author wonders:

My question back to these same pharmacists would be, who's guarding the condom aisle? Do their "consciences" prevent them from filling prescriptions for Viagra and other male sex drugs, especially when unmarried men want to buy them? If they're going to make moral judgments about prescription drugs, let them work at church-run hospitals, instead of in commercial pharmacies. Better yet, drop out of the profession entirely and become missionaries.


My friend is having a hysterectomy and I told her to be careful because she lives in Florida and they might try to have a congressional vote to insert a feeding tube in her uterus to keep it alive.

I don't know where this rise in evangelical conservative Christianity is coming from. I am surprised that the other religions in the United States, namely Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, Sikhs, Pagans, Wiccans, Athiests, etc. aren't screaming bloody murder over the oppressive blanket that we as a nation are being smothered with. Aren't they infuriated by the theocracy that is forming ( or at least the attempt at a theocracy?) Maybe they are too frightened because dissent=terrorism.

Congress' Implicit Healthcare Rationing.

I am focusing on healthcare because I have been to the doctor every day that I am not in school. I have to have some surgery and I am concerned with the cap on my HMO policy. I think it is $300K and I wonder if anything unexpected happens what kind of financial burden this might put on me and my family. I read the other day that it is cheaper for a state to give a patient medicaid then it is for a company to offer HMO benefits, but that doesn't take in to consideration the number of people that go bankrupt from inadequate HMO benefits when true disaster strikes.

My birthdate, when calculated, corresponds to the tarot card "wheel of fortune." What this card means is outside, unseen, uneartly forces that are beyond human control are at play. For bad or worse, there are bigger forces moving around. That means that a theme in my life is letting go and trusting the universe is a just universe based on cause and effect. Karma, some might call it.

I have a problem with giving up control so obviously this is a big issue for me. Give up control to a higher power? Give me a break! But I think we can all agree that there are things in life -big or small- that we can't do anything about. So we have a choice. We can either frustrate ourselves into an early grave shaking our fists at the heavens and spitting in the wind or we can let it go and have faith in justice and our own ability to handle adversity.

What I am trying to say in my own meandering way is that I can let go and not try to fight useless battles like arguing idealogy and perspective with people that are fundamentalist, racist, or general haters OR I could focus my energy where I can actually create change. I can draw a line in the sand and tell a pharmacist not to deny me my right to birth control and take his or her ass all the way to the supreme court if I have to. I can write a blog that might awaken someone's passion for social justice. I can march in the streets for peace and equality. I can try to educate people that are interested in truth. I can live my life by an ethical code that doesn't infringe on any other persons civil rights. I can demand that same ethical code from my society and government without invoking a God or religion. I can hold corporations accountable for the lives they destroy or dismiss. I can demand a quality of life that is about more than abortion or euthanasia, but includes issues of poverty, violence, war, adequate healthcare and education.

I can stay strong and fight even when people insult me, curse at me, spit at me, question my character and threaten my life. I can rest assured that the angrier the offenders of equality are the closer I am at getting to the heart of darkness:fear.
I can die fighting for what I believe in instead of cowering in self-consciousness and keeping the status quo. This mission won't come with a huge salary. I won't gain material wealth, popularity or social status. It will take pain and sweat and I will want to quit but I will stare at the fork in the road and I will always chose the unbeaten path- the path of most resistance. I will grow strong and wise and connect to every soul on this planet until I am one of many drops in an churning ocean that will not be calmed; a tidal wave of humanity demanding justice, demanding retribution, demanding peace regardless of race, sexual preference, gender, nationality, or religion until we are all one organism that has learned that we are no more than the sum of our parts. This won't be easy and I wouldn't have it any other way.
